Who won South Dakota? Trump beats Clinton in traditionally Republican state.

There was never really any doubt Donald Trump would win South Dakota. The last time a Democrat won South Dakota was in 1964; the state has otherwise voted for Republicans since 1940. 

And at 9:01 p.m., the Associated Press called the state for the Republican candidate. He follows the lead of Mitt Romney, who won the state by 18 percentage points in 2012, and John McCain, who won it by 8 points in 2008. 

South Dakota saw few polls during presidential elections, but a late October poll only gave Trump a seven point lead in the state.

While typically Republican, South Dakota is a minor state on the electoral map, carrying only 3 electoral votes.
