Impact

Donald Trump avoided an embarrassing and candidacy-ending defeat in Georgia, which was viewed as within reach for Hillary Clinton only a few weeks ago.

Polls showed a tight race for Georgia's 16 electoral votes as late as September. While the state voted for Bill Clinton in 1992, it went to the Republican presidential nominee in the next five elections.

Only seven states have more electoral votes than Georgia as its population has grown substantially in recent years.
