Hailing from South Korea, BTS took home the top social artist award at the 2017 Billboard Music Awards on Sunday, becoming the first K-pop group to win a trophy at the annual ceremony.

The seven-member act beat out four other artists in the category, including Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande and Shawn Mendes. The top social award is decided by music fans who voted for their favorite artists by tweeting a special hashtag for the group.

BTS is an acronym for Bangtan Boys, which is Korean for "bulletproof boy scouts." The members of the BTS are Rap Monster, Suga, Jungkook Jeon, J-Hope, Jimin Park, Jin and V. The group is known for performing a combination of hip-hop influenced K-pop and broke out with their first album, 2 Cool 4 Skool, in 2013.
