Should I Vote? Yes! And Here is Why

Impact

Four years ago, I knew little about politics or even what mattered to me politically. Four years ago, I was 6 months out of college and eager to use my vote to make a change or something else equally corny. Four years ago, I was overly eager to be able to vote at a polling place for the first time. This time around, I’m afraid. However, I’m not afraid of Obama/Biden losing this election, I’m afraid of Romney/Ryan winning it.

After four years of Barack Obama’s leadership, I’m not impressed. I don’t think many people are. And the fact that a man who thinks that people should be treated as employees and countries as companies who is partnered with a man who thinks that women don’t deserve many rights (besides, you know, to vote for him) could win this thing, is scary.  What we can lose from a Romney presidency is far greater than what we would not gain from a continued Obama presidency.

And to be clear, I don’t think voting for Barack Obama is settling because I think he will mightily outperform his first term. I see Romney’s desire to shrink government power as an attack on democracy, whereas I see Obama’s last four years as an attempt to promote this great ideal through bipartisanship.

The bottom line is that we should all vote. Election Day is always a special day because it creates a dichotomy in equality; those that can vote and those that cannot. A person’s wealth does not necessarily get them a bigger say on Election Day. Support the democratic process and have your voice heard because it is just as important as everyone else’s voice.

That’s just my two cents. If you’re at all still confused about whom you should end up voting for, you should check out http://www.isidewith.com. It’ll tell you exactly whom you side with on some major political issues!
