Millions of Milkshakes Protest: Bahrain Rallies Against Kardashian

Culture

As pro and anti-Muslim Brotherhood demonstrators clash in Cairo over Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi's power grab and subsequent constitution, another kind of protest took place in the neighboring Kingdom of Bahrain.

According to the AP, American reality television star Kim Kardashian, who is in a Middle East tour to open international branches of her 'Millions of Milkshakes' store was the cause of an Islamic protest that had to be dispersed by police using tear gas.

The demonstrators were against Kardashian's visit, and store opening, for what they believe is the star's "bad reputation." Kardashian, who became famous in the United States because of a sex tape, is considered by conservatives from the Kingdom as sort of a bad influence for women (and men) in Bahrain.

Protesters reportedly chanted "God is Great" by the shopping center, in Riffa (12 miles south of the capital Manama), where Kardashian opened her store on Saturday. However, demonstrators were cleared before the reality television star appeared on the scene.

But not all Bahraini were against Kardashian's visit. The country's foreign minister reportedly retweeted the star of Keeping Up With the Kardashians' when she tweeted that Bahrain was "the prettiest place on earth."
