British astronomer and broadcaster Patrick Moore died Sunday at 89, according to The Washington Post. His family, friends — among them Queen guitarist Brian May — and neighbors from the coastal town of Selsey (southern England) didn't release a specific cause of death. But it was known Moore was "confined to a wheelchair."

Moore was famous through the BBC television show The Sky at Night, which popularized astronomy among generations of Britons spanning almost five decades, according to WaPo

“Over the past few years, Patrick, an inspiration to generations of astronomers, fought his way back from many serious spells of illness and continued to work and write at a great rate, but this time his body was too weak to overcome the infection which set in a few weeks ago,” said an official statement that also added Moore was briefly hospitalized last week "when it was determined no more treatment would help him."
