NRA Press Conference on Sandy Hook and Gun Control: LIVE

Impact

The National Rifle Association will hold a rare press conference this morning at 10:45. They’ve laid low since the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut, where 26 people were killed, including 20 small children.

Since the massacre, there has been an increased push for gun control. President Obama pledged to use “all the power his office holds” to prevent another Sandy Hook, and has expressed support for a new federal ban on assault rifles and high impact ammunition.

The NRA is not likely to support new legislation restricting access to guns, but by coming out publicly to join the conversation they’re raising the stakes; acknowledging that we can’t just go about our lives like nothing happened while 20 first graders are buried.

That said, the Friday before Christmas is the perfect time to have a press conference if you don’t really want it to get any attention. It’s yet to be seen whether any proposals of substance will be offered.
