Golden Globes 2013: 4 Must-See Moments

Impact

The 70th annual Golden Globe Awards was a night filled with surprises and laughs as the Hollywood Foreign Press Press Association honored the best film and television from 2012. Former Saturday Night Live cast members Tina Fey and Amy Poehler were the hosts of the show, exciting the crowd with their witty and outrageous one-liners. As with any awards show, there were many stand-out moments. Here are some of the moments that provided added entertainment to the evening.

1. Opening Monologue

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler showed off their comedic talents during their monologue. The two were also both nominees and thus rivals for the Best Actress in a TV Comedy category, for Fey’s performance in 30 Rock, and Poehler’s work on Parks and Recreation. The duo stole the show as they made hilarious remarks about several nominees.

2. Bill Clinton

The biggest surprise of the night came from former President Bill Clinton’s brief cameo on stage. Clinton was greeted by a standing ovation, as he introduced Lincoln, a contender for Best Drama. Clinton conducted a powerful monologue on the achievements of President Lincoln and gave insight into the historical period in which the film is set.

3. Argo

Argo was a major victor last night as the film won the categories of Best Drama and Best Director, beating out several formidable contenders. For the “Best Drama” category, the film beat critics’ favorites Lincoln and Zero Dark Thirty. The film’s star and director Ben Affleck was snubbed by the Academy Awards, but he was humbled when making his acceptance speech for Best Director. Affleck beat director legends Steven Spielberg and Ang Lee. “I don’t care what the award is, when they put your name next to the names that she just read off, it is an extraordinary thing in your life…these nominees are exceptional talents,” he said.

4. Jodie Foster

Jodi Foster gave a powerful speech upon accepting the Cecil B. DeMille lifetime achievement award. Foster was honored for her acting career that has developed for some 40 years. The speech was certainly memorable, as the actress opened up about her personal life, so much so that she joked about her sexuality serving as a mock opportunity to "come out." Foster also discussed the value of privacy, as she criticized a culture of reality television: "Privacy — maybe someday in the future, people will look back and remember how beautiful it once was. I have given everything out there, from the time I was three years old. That is reality enough.” Foster’s message was a bit scattered and erratic, leaving many wondering if she was hinting at retirement. However, she left many in tears and gave homage to the career she built.
