In one of the more horrific sports injuries I’ve seen in years, Louisville guard Kevin Ware sustained an open fracture of his right tibia (that’s a leg bone, for you non-M.D.s) when he landed awkwardly after attempting to block a Duke player’s three-point shot attempt last night. Ware’s words for his Louisville teammates? “I’ll be fine, just win the game.” The Cardinals fought on for a 85-63 victory, advancing to the Final Four, and Ware underwent successful surgery shortly after. “He’s a brave young man,” said Louisville head Coach Rick Pitino. Doctors say “the injury is not likely a career-ending one.”
