Dzhokhar Tsarnaev Manhunt Timeline

Impact

Enough information has emerged to assemble a rough timeline of the violent incident unfolding in and around the MIT Cambridge campus and Watertown, Massachusetts in what has been confirmed to be the manhunt for the individuals responsible for Monday's major bombing at the Boston Marathon. In that attack, three were killed and nearly 200 were injured, many of them severely.

The two terrorists have been identified as Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev, two Chechen brothers who moved to the U.S. about a decade ago. Tamerlan Tsarnaev was reportedly killed in a firefight with officers late Friday night. Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is at large.

Courtesy of the New York Times, here's a rough timeline:

7/11 robbed: Late Thursday night, a security camera catches a robbery involving a man identified as one of the suspects, wearing a gray hoodie.

Stata Center Shooting: About 10:30 p.m., MIT campus police officer Sean Collier, just 26 years old, is shot by the fleeing suspects. He is taken to Massachusetts General Hospital, where he expires.

Armed carjacking in Cambridge: A short time later, a black Mercedes S.U.V. is hijacked by two men around Third Street.

Carjacking victim released: 30 minutes later the carjacking victim is released at a gas station at Memorial Drive in Cambridge.

Watertown: Police pursue black SUV into Watertown, a nearby suburb. Explosives are reportedly deployed against pursuing law enforcement officers by the suspects. At this point, media begins speculating connection between Watertown and Boston Marathon incidents.

Suspects and law enforcement exchange fire. Watertown resident Andrew Kitzenberg, 29, describes a scene of chaos, including two men exchanging “constant” gunfire with heavily armed officers. A police SUV reportedly attempts to drive at active shooters and is disabled by heavy damage. Bombs are thrown at police but fail to cause casualties. While one man, presumably Tamerlan Tsarnaev, is tackled by the authorities and is subsequently reported killed, the other, presumably Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, rams through police position in the vehicle.

The remaining suspect is at large and is extremely dangerous. He may be in possession of high-power weaponry and explosives. Boston authorities have advised all residents to stay indoors, and advised the evacuation of most transit stations. Area businesses have been told not to open.

If you are in Boston and particularly if you are near the Watertown area, please remain indoors and lock all entrances to your residence until police give the all clear.
