Dzhokhar Tsarnaev: Injuries May Prevent Him From Speaking to Investigators

Impact

Investigators may never have a chance to question 19-year-old bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev as he remains in serious condition following wounds he suffered Friday night. Local CBS Boston affiliate is reporting that Dzhokhar may have attempted suicide before police took him into custody.

The 19-year-old bombing suspect suffered at least two bullet wounds, one of which went through his neck and exited his back. The neck would is the primary reason Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is unable to speak with investigators. Former FBI assistant director John Miller told CBS that the neck wound could have been sustained during a suicide attempt.

Those investigating the bombing are extremely eager to ask the 19-year-old questions as they attempt to piece together the puzzle of what lead to Monday’s deadly bombing. One of the most important questions will be whether or not the brother’s acted alone or if their acts were the result of ties to larger terrorist network. Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel has said that he has seen no evidence that links the two brothers to any outside terror cells. An individual, speaking to CNN, said that the suspect was in serious, but stable condition. Tsarnaev is expected to face both federal and state charges for the bombings that killed three and injured more than 170 people. Charges could filed as soon as Sunday.

For now, investigators will have to rely on the brothers behaviors prior to and following the bombing. They are focusing on the 19-year-old's attendance of a party at a U-Mass at Dartmouth, two days after the bombings. Investigators also returned to the scene where Tsarnaev was captured Friday evening. Gov. Patrick said they are pursuing leads and will run them into the ground as part of their investigation into the deadly bombings.
