This Saturday will see one of the most celebrated sporting events in the world take place. The 139th running of the Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks will take place at the Churchill Downs racetrack in Louisville, Kentucky. The race is a historic tradition that goes all the way back to 1875 and has been run every year since.

The biggest event in horse racing, the Kentucky Derby has itself become a huge cultural event for Louisville. Hordes of tourists, gamblers, and the simply curious descend upon the city for the event, which is always on the first Saturday in May.
