The Senate begins voting on the Gang of Eight’s immigration reform bill today, in a debate most expect to last until Congress’ July 4 break. Democrats will try to pass the bill quickly, but they may face strong opposition from Republicans: Even Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), a member of the Gang of Eight, says the bill will not pass without stronger border control measures. If the bill nets the 60 votes required to pass the Senate, it will face a stiffer test in the Republican-controlled House. In an interview on ABC’s Good Morning America today, House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) expressed concern about the bill, but said he expects it to pass by the end of the year. President Obama will try to set the tone for the Senate debate with a speech in support of immigration reform later this morning.
