Turkey Protests LIVE: Live-streaming Of Demonstrations in Istanbul

Impact

Protesters and police are clashing in Istanbul, as demonstrations in Turkey rage on. The protesters are attempting to retake Taksim Square after being forced out by police. Demostrations began after the government announced it would overhaul of Gezi Park, located in the square. The objections to the park demolition have morphed into a wider protest against the Turkish government, led by Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan, who has promised zero tolerance for the demonstrators.

Turkish police have been using water cannons and tear gas in an attempt to disperse the protesters, but the crowd seems intent on staying, even setting off fireworks in the square. The prospect of the Erdogan government falling as others have in the region seems unlikely, as the secular Turkish government is considered one of the more stable in the region. Turkey is a staunch U.S. ally, and Erdogan was just in the U.S. last month meeting with President Obama.
