February 26: High school student Trayvon Martin is shot and killed in Sanford, Florida. He and the shooter, George Zimmerman, are identified the next day. Zimmerman claims he killed Martin in self-defense, and police do not arrest him or test him for drugs or alcohol.
March 9: The family of Trayvon Martin requests the release of 911 tapes from the night of the shooting, after a press conference the day before urging the arrest of Zimmerman for murder.
March 12: The case is dealt to state prosecutors to determine whether Zimmerman will face charges.
March 16: Excerpts from the 911 calls related to the incident are released and published. The case garners more and more national attention, as the tapes don’t seem to support Zimmerman’s claim that he acted in self defense. (This is when all hell starts to break loose.)

Details emerge that reveal Zimmerman violated major ideals of the Neighborhood Watch program, like carrying a weapon and pursuing a suspicious person. Martin’s 16-year-old girlfriend tells lawyers she was on the phone with him as the altercation began.
March 20: The Sanford Police Department admits they missed a possible racist slur by Zimmerman while speaking to a police dispatcher before he shot Martin.
