Washington Navy Yard Shooting LIVE: Lone Gunman Aaron Alexis is Dead

On Monday morning at approximately 8:20, former Navy reservist and Hewlett-Packard IT subcontractor Aaron Alexis commenced a shooting rampage at the Washington, D.C. Navy Yard. When it was over, he had shot and killed 12 employees and wounded several others at the facility before he was killed either by his own hand or the police's. Although authorities initially believed multiple shooters were involved, it has been determined that Alexis was the lone gunman. 

The shooting happened inside building 197 of the Naval Sea Systems Command Headquarters (NAVSEA) building in downtown Washington, D.C., the largest of the Navy's five system commands. The office is in charge of engineering, building, buying and maintaining ships, submarines and combat systems, and employs approximately 3,000 people. The command has an annual budget of nearly $30 billion, accounting for one quarter of the Navy's entire budget. 

The Navy said that three shots were fired around 8:20 a.m. Hundreds of police officers from various agencies were reported on the scene, and a  “shelter in place” order was issued for Navy Yard personnel. Officials at Reagan National Airport ordered all outgoing flights held. The incident has been called the deadliest mass shooting in the U.S. since 26 people were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School last December.
