Aaron Alexis Guns: The Weapons the Navy Yard Gunman Used

Impact

According to reports, during his shooting spree that left 12 people dead, gunman Aaron Alexis was armed with a shotgun, and two handguns. Initial reports said Alexis was armed with an AR-15, but this was not the case. On Monday morning at 8:20, Alexis opened fire at the Navy Yard in Washington, D.C. Alexis worked for a company called The Experts, which is a subcontractor for Hewlett-Packard. Alexis set up on the third and fourth floors of building 197, and proceeded to open fire on people in the atrium below.

According to USA Today, "A federal law enforcement official said Monday that Alexis, who had been staying at a nearby Residence Inn since late August or early September, legally purchased at least some of the weapons used in the assault within the past few days in Virginia."

The AR-15 rifle gained national notoriety last December when it was identified as a weapon that Adam Lanza had used during his shooting spree at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., that left 26 people dead, including 20 children.
