Read the Heartbreaking Letter From Aaron Alexis's Mother

Impact

Cathleen Alexis, mother of Aaron Alexis, apologized to the victims of the Navy Yard shootout on behalf of her son. Not wanting to be on camera, Cathleen spoke to one reporter in the privacy of her home. An excerpt of her statement follows:

"Our son Alexis has murdered 12 people and wounded several others. His actions have had a profound and everlasting effect on the families of the victims. I don't know why he did what he did, and I'll never be able to ask him, why. Aaron is now in a place where he can no longer do harm to anyone, and for that I am glad.

To the families of the victims, I am so, so very sorry that this has happened. My heart is broken."

Cathleen's statement comes two days after her son's brutal actions. While the police are still investigating motives for Aaron Alexis's decisions, his mother's words show compassion and empathy for the victims and families of her son's crimes. Hopefully her words will help give strength to those affected in the tragedy, and in return will help her cope with the scope and depth of her son's act.
