Secret Service Agent For Newt Gingrich Can't Believe He Missed Awesome Colombia Gig

ATLANTA, Georgia -- Currently assigned to protect long-shot Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich on the campaign trail, Special Agent Scott Brewer expressed dismay on Tuesday at having missed the chance to be on the president’s advance team in Cartagena, Colombia, where nearly a dozen agents became embroiled in a high-profile prostitution scandal. A nine-year veteran of the Secret Service who became part of Gingrich’s security detail in March, Brewer said he was originally scheduled to arrive in Colombia in early April as part of President Obama’s team for the Summit of the Americas, but had been assigned to the former Speaker based on the assumption his candidacy would not last much longer.

An exasperated Brewer explained the circumstances that led to him missing the summit. “My supervisor said he was assigning me to the Gingrich detail, but that I’d still be going to Colombia because he was going to drop out of the race any day. That was over two months ago. He’s still running and I’m still here. Why is he still running?”

Gingrich has won only two primaries and is currently in third place in delegates behind frontrunner Mitt Romney, whose nomination is a virtual certainty. Gingrich had a Secret Service detail assigned to him by the Department of Homeland Security on March 6, effective until he withdraws from the race. While there is no exact figure as to the cost of the detail, it is believed to be in the tens of thousands of dollars per day.

“It’s not fair,” said Brewer. “Have you seen the news? Those guys had a blast,” he said, referring to the agents implicated in the scandal. “Hookers, booze, a nice hotel. And did I mention those hookers? Did you see those photos? Total smokeshows. I would’ve been all over that. It’s just not fair.”  

Reached for comment at his campaign’s headquarters, Gingrich said he plans on staying in the race until Rick Santorum stops sending him threatening emails.
