Hillary Clinton, Sarah Palin and the Top 5 Moms in American Politics

From the classic hockey and soccer moms to the recent Ann Romney and Hillary Rosen’s controversy between WOHM and SAHM, this election season is putting motherhood front and center, and what a better way of celebrating 2012 Mothers Day than by compiling the top 5 moms of American politics.

1. Hillary Clinton:

The Secretary of State, who recently made headlines with her “girl gone wild” party night in Cartagena, Colombia, leads PolicyMic’s Top 5 Mom in politics countdown thanks to her empowering role model for daughter Chelsea Clinton, who during the 1998 Monica Lewinsky scandal was photographed between Bill and Hillary holding their hands as if trying to keep together not only the First Family but also the country at large.

2. Sarah Palin:

Love her or hate her the former governor of Alaska and 2008 vice presidential nominee has put motherhood front and center of her political career by stressing family values and highlighting her pro-life stance via the highly publicized birth of son Trig, who she decided to have despite the doctor's warning of potential Down syndrome. Palin’s daughter Bristol recently made headlines by criticizing president Obama for taking advise from daughters Sasha and Malia regarding gay marriage.

3. Lisa Murkowski:

The Republican senator from Alaska who became famous by being the first politician to win an election as a write-in candidate in more than 50 years is the politician mom of Nicolas and Matthew. Recently she made headlines by criticizing her own party's stance on women's rights. 

4. Susana Martinez:

The Republican governor of New Mexico, and potential 2012 GOP vice presidential pick, made headlines by becoming the first Latina governor of the United States. She is marred to law enforcement officer Chuck Franco, and is the stepmother of Carlos Franco who served in the United States Navy.

5. Nancy Pelosi:

Former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (the first female Speaker of the House of Representatives) has been married since 1963 to Paul Pelosi with whom she’s had five children: Nancy Corine, Chrsitine, Jacqueline, Paul and Alexandra, as well as eight grandchildren. Alexandra, a journalist, covered the presidential campaign in 2000 and made a film about the experience: Journeys with George.
