Mark Zuckerberg Priscilla Chan Marry in Surprise Facebook Wedding

Culture

Mark Zuckerberg married longtime girlfriend Priscilla Chan on Saturday, a day after taking Facebook public, in a surprise ceremony to most of the 100 guests who were told they were going to a surprise University of California, San Francisco, graduation party for Chan.

Here are 4 highlights from the low-key event:

1. Facebook Update:

Where else would the couple announce the good news that through Facebook updates on their respective profiles?

2. No Tux, No Hoodie:

The couple got married in the backyard of Zuckerberg’s Palo Alto home. And while Zuck didn’t wear his signature hoodie, he looked rather casual for a big event like this.

3. Community Property:

Most states leave it up to married couples to separate their assets into “yours,” “mine” and “ours.” The law imposes a framework for spouses in the nine community property states, which include California (where Zuckerberg and Chan live). According to these rules, most of what one acquires once married is considered community property (i.e. each party is considered a “one-half owner”).

4. Prenuptial Agreement?

Marrying Chan after the initial public offering would protect Facebook assets in the event of a divorce; since they achieved their current value before they tied the knot, in a divorce she could only receive the difference.
