The coming out process for transgender children is one fraught with challenges and fears for many trans youth. Will my parents understand? Will they accept me for who I really am? Will they be confused, disappointed or worse — reject me? There's even a WikiHow page on the subject.
But parents everywhere could learn a little something about how to respond to your transgender child coming out from Jodi Gholson Oliver. The Las Vegas-based hairstylist announced her 19-year-old son's coming out with a beautifully written, celebratory note posted to her Facebook page on March 27. And it's pretty much perfect.
"This is something that we have all seen over the years," Oliver noted. "I am so happy that he can finally feel like the person he was born to be!" The proud mama also opened the floor to questions about being transgender and the transition process. But the vast majority of the post's 100-plus comments have been simple congratulations or words of thanks for setting such an inspiring example for the parents of transgender children everywhere.
Jes also shared his mom's post on his Tumblr, with the note:
"My mom let her facebook friends/family know what's up regarding me just now and this is how she did it. Heck yeah, mom."
Oliver has since followed up her initial post with this comment reaffirming her faith in her son's decision.
I admire Jes for being brave enough to walk to the beat of his own drum all his life. He could have chosen the "easy" road, but he chose to take the road that leads to "truth", and by him taking this action, and all of us talking about it, the "easy" road will eventually be the one that leads to "truth."
Heck yeah, indeed. Now if only Piers Morgan and Jodi Gholson Oliver were friends.
