The Real Reason Your Starbucks Barista Can Never Spell Your Name Right

What's your favorite part about visiting Starbucks? Getting your personalized coffee made just the right way? Waiting to find out if they're serving those delicious Pumpkin Spice Lattes? How about playing everyone's favorite game of: "Why would you possibly think that's how you spell my name?"

As this point, it's almost become a universal truth that  your barista will not be able to spell your name right, no matter how simple it is. And while sometimes the issue will be spelling your name as "Mathew" instead of "Matthew," other times, the word-Picasso behind the counter will give your name a whole new spin — maybe something closer to "Botheu5" or "Mophu." Nice, right?

But what does that happen? And why does it seem to keep happening over and over again?

That's exactly what comedian Paul Gale tried to answer in his new video.

That's right — it's not as though they don't know how to spell your name, or don't care to try. The baristas can definitely spell, but this way they're "in your head." Though a simple (or not-so-simple) typo from a random stranger in a coffee shop shouldn't really matter, it does. It matters enough that we'll tell all our friends about it over social media. And it matters enough that, whether we admit it or not, we're all a little hurt when our names handled like a piece of baggage by the TSA — with complete disregard for any sense of human decency.

Obviously, it's an idea that resonates loudly — the two day old video already has over 1.3 million hits — but hopefully by knowing just how silly complaining about it is, we'll all be able to get over it soon.
