Read on to find a list of budget-friendly tools and devices that can speed up almost any project.
01This spackling formula that leaves a smooth surface ready to be painted
If you’re planning on painting a room, this pre-mixed lightweight spackling formula is great to have on hand. It’s ideal for filling up cracks, holes, and other imperfections on interior and exterior walls, is easy to apply, and dries quickly, says Andriy Boyko, a professional handyman and mason at A.O. Handy Inc. “It sands smoothly, creating a flawless surface ready for painting,” he adds, noting that it’s great for small touch-ups and larger repairs. “It simplifies the preparation process for any painting project.”
02These handy pyramids that make painting projects easier
Boyko calls these a “valuable addition to any painter’s toolkit” and highly recommends them as a budget-friendly pick. “These innovative pyramids allow you to paint one side of an item and flip it over without touching the wet paint,” he explains. They are particularly great for painting doors, trim, and cabinets since they help ensure even coverage and can prevent smudges, and Boyko appreciates their “lightweight and durable design.”
03These versatile leveling clips that make it easier to install tile
If you’re installing tile, whether it’s porcelain, ceramic, marble, or natural stone, you’ll want to have this pack of leveling clips on hand. “They work with both floor and wall tiles, helping to maintain a consistent level across the surface,” Boyko says. He explains that not only will they simplify the entire installation process but they can also improve the final look of the project. (Use the clips with these wedges, sold separately).
04A set of sanding sponges that lead to smoother surfaces
Before you start spackling or painting a surface, be sure to use these sanding sponges. Made of a flexible, durable foam, these dual-sided sponges have a comfortable grip that makes them much easier to use than traditional sanding paper. Boyko calls them a “versatile and practical tool for various sanding needs,” saying, “They provide a smooth finish and last longer than traditional sandpaper.” He notes that they’re great for smoothing out drywall, wood, and metal surfaces, as well as wet or dry sanding.
05A jab saw that easily gets through just about anything
For just under $15, this little hand saw is something you’ll definitely want to have in your toolbox. It can be used for cutting through most surfaces, including drywall, plywood, and plastic, and Boyko likes the ergonomic handle that makes it more comfortable to hold and use. “Its sharp, aggressive teeth ensure fast and efficient cutting, making it a reliable tool for various construction and renovation projects,” he says.
06The versatile utility knife experts dub an “essential tool”
If you need a new box cutter, Boyko swears by this premium utility knife, saying it “cuts through various materials with ease.” He particularly likes the comfortable grip and the quick-change blade mechanism, which makes it easy to replace blades as needed. Three adjustable blade positions help you make precise cuts and the blade retracts into a safe locked position when not in use.
07A laser level you’ll use for projects big & small to get accurate measurements
This laser level comes in handy whether you’re simply hanging a picture frame or installing shelves. It comes with a 360-degree rotating wall attachment that allows the laser line to project at any angle, helping to ensure straight lines for any project. Boyko likes the two bubble vials with backlights “for increased visibility” and says it’s easy to use.
08This large & inexpensive pack of microfiber cloths that clean any surface
This pack of 50 microfiber cleaning cloths comes at a great price of less than $20, especially considering they are washable and reusable. Robert Walden, mechanic, home improvement expert, and founder of Vehicle Freak, calls them “fantastic” for dusting and cleaning almost any part of your home or car. “They’re good on pretty much any surface and last through many cleanings,” he says. They’re softer and more eco-friendly than paper towels, and because of their durability, this set should last you a very long time. They’re also super absorbent, dry quickly, and are non-abrasive.
09A spray cleaner that makes any tech screen look clear & brand new
Fingerprints, dust, and grime can easily and quickly build up on the screens of any tech surface, which is why this TV screen cleaner is so great to have on hand. “This cleaner, used by Apple in their stores, works wonders on any glass, mirror, or screen,” Walden says. He likes that it repels dust and that the included microfiber cloths offer a streak-free finish. You can use this large bottle on your TVs, computers, phones, and even eyeglasses for a super clean and clear result.
10This powerful spray that destroys bacteria & viruses in 60 seconds
Ideal for high-touch, non-food contact surfaces such as door handles and remote controls, this highly rated sanitizing spray promises to destroy 99.9% of bacteria within 60 seconds. It also promises to protect surfaces and keep eliminating bacteria and viruses for up to 24 hours after that initial spray. “It leaves a long-lasting clean scent and doesn’t stain or discolor surfaces,” Walden says.
11A set of brush attachments that turn your drill into a cleaning tool
Your power drill may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of cleaning your house, but this set of drill brush attachments will change that. The 30-pack comes with a variety of brush heads that go onto your drill, including scour pads, wool pads, and scrub brushes. The brushes turn the tool into a surprisingly great way to clean anything in your home. “Your drill does all the work, spinning the brush to quickly scrub away tough grime,” Walden explains, saying this is particularly useful for cleaning grout and getting rid of stubborn stains.
12These small brushes for cleaning hard-to-reach spots
Forget the old toothbrush you’ve been using as a cleaner — this set of two deep clean brushes can get into almost any tricky spot. The set comes with a larger brush great for cleaning grout and shower door tracks, while the smaller brush is good for fixtures and tiny areas, with a wiper blade for removing grime. “The brushes have sturdy bristles and nonslip grips for comfortable use,” Walden says.
13This magnetic wristband that (literally) keeps nails & screws on hand
You’ll never lose another nail, screw, or drill bit when you’re wearing this magnetic wristband, which Matthew Ferris, master plumber, HVAC expert, and the founder of Ferris Plumbing, calls a “lifesaver.” Wide and durable but still lightweight enough to be comfortable, it has a strong magnetic strip and can hold your smaller items so they don’t roll off a table. You can wear it or just place it next to you.
14A sealing compound one expert calls “an absolute must”
This tub of plumber’s putty contains a caulking and sealing compound that is soft and pliable (but not too sticky) to work with. It dries into a waterproof seal that won’t crack or shrink and can be used on multiple surfaces. Ferris notes that it’s great for things like sealing drains and preventing leaks around faucets, calling it an “absolute must” and adding, “This tub from Oatey is the real deal — easy to work with and creates a reliable, long-lasting seal.”
15A professional drain snake that gets rid of clogs effortlessly
“This 25-foot drain auger [...] can power through just about any blockage,” Ferris raves. “It's sturdy, slides smoothly, and grips that gunk.” Easy to use and sufficiently large enough for most household clogs, this gets rid of hair and other gunk, allowing drains to run more smoothly. It comes with gloves to keep your hands clean, and the springs can be stored in the drum so you don’t lose them.
16This inexpensive plumber’s tape that seals fittings & pipes
Also known as Teflon tape, this is a sealant for most soft water pipes, something Ferris calls “cheap insurance against leaky threaded pipe connections.” This particular set is a multi-pack of 10 rolls of tape, which means you’ll always have some when you need it. “It’s durable, easy to apply, and seals those threads tight,” Ferris says. It’s also a great price for 10 rolls, so it’s easy to replace as needed.
17A handy tool that makes it easier to remove siding
Whether you’re renovating the outside of your house or simply need to remove siding in an area, this siding removal tool is something you’ll want to use. “This tool is designed to safely remove damaged siding without causing harm to surrounding areas,” explains Brendan Anderson, owner of Brix Systems Roofing. He likes the ergonomic handle and durable construction, and at a cost of under $15, it’s definitely worth a try.
18A set of drywall anchors that offer much-needed stability
Made of durable and strong plastic, these drywall anchors are self-drilling and can speed up the process of certain projects. “These anchors provide a secure hold without pre-drilling, perfect for gutter work or installing fixtures on the roof,” Anderson says. They can hold up to 50 pounds and the 100-piece set comes in a reusable case.
19A durable tape measure with a long reach
Not all tape measures are created equal, and this Stanley tape measure is proof of that. Anderson appreciates the durable design, wide blade and large numbers that offer an easy reading, and the extended reach he calls a “standout feature.” The full tape blade coating can stand up to abrasion and with 14 feet of reach, it makes working alone a little easier.
20This convenient bucket organizer to keep tools in place
This handy bucket organizer is a favorite of Anderson’s, who says it “provides ample storage for tools, fasteners, and accessories.” It fits over a standard 5-gallon bucket and is particularly great when working in spaces where you can’t lay out your tools (Anderson likes using it while working on a roof). It has plenty of pockets for neat organization, as well as three interior loops for hammers, drills, and other long-handled tools.
21These highly rated safety goggles with clear, anti-fog lenses
No matter what kind of work you’re doing, safety should always be top of mind. These safety goggles have nearly 45,000 positive ratings and a slew of rave reviews for their clear lenses that have an anti-fog coating and a hard surface that protects against scratches. “These offer impact resistance and UV protection,” Anderson says, noting that he loves them for roofing work. The elastic band is stretchy and adjustable for a comfortable fit, and vents allow for breathability.
22These bright pencils that won’t get lost easily
A requirement for certain work you’re doing around a home, these carpenter pencils are something you’ll use again and again. A set of five costs less than $5, which is a great price. They come recommended by Anderson, who specifically loves the rectangular shape that prevents them from rolling away. The super bright orange hue also makes them more visible even in a messy area.

This cordless rotary tool kit is one that will “handle countless tasks,” and is recommended by Kevin McLaughlin, owner of Heritage Exteriors LLC. You can use it to cut, grind, sand, or polish, and it comes with five accessories to do everything efficiently. The rechargeable battery uses the included USB cable, and it’s lightweight and portable enough to take anywhere.
24A roll of painter’s tape that won’t leave any damage or residue behind
When you’re repainting a room, furniture, or fixtures, McLaughlin strongly recommends getting quality painter’s tape like this to protect surfaces and help with clean lines. “For under $10, you can get sharp lines without residue,” he says, explaining why he likes this one in particular. It’s designed to be damage-free, but the adhesive is also strong enough to last for up to 14 days and it can be used inside or outside.
25These durable suspenders that double as a spot for your tools
These heavy-duty tool belt suspenders not only prevent you from becoming a victim of the plumber’s crack joke, but they also help prevent potential injury and act as a convenient spot for some of your tools. “Without suspenders, belts slip, especially when you’re tooled up,” explains Richard Ala, founder of Six Brothers Contractors. “When you’re bending or moving it can be annoying at best and a safety hazard at worst.” He likes these for stability and comfort, and another bonus is that they have pockets and loops for some of your tools so they’re always by your side. They also come with a magnetic wristband, so for the price, you’re getting a lot.
26These convenient planters that do the watering for you
Can’t seem to keep even the most low-maintenance potted plants alive? These self-watering plants are a game changer. Jeremy Yamaguchi, CEO of Lawn Love, calls these an “excellent, clever product,” saying, “They’re inexpensive and a fantastic tool for busy people or anyone who struggles to keep plants alive.” Once the saucer is filled with water, the self-watering system creates a steady stream of water that keeps soil hydrated for up to two weeks — and it requires minimal work on your end.
27A versatile shelf liner that keeps everything in place
This is marketed as a shelf and cabinet liner, and while it’s definitely great for your kitchen and pantry, it can also become a staple in your workshop and elsewhere. “I use it to keep tools from sliding in my truck and on surfaces when working,” says Josh Mitchell, an HVAC and plumbing technician and founder of Plumbing Lab and Air Conditioner Lab. “It cuts easily, is washable, and is durable enough for heavy tools.” The strong grip holds everything in place, and it’s available in a wide variety of sizes and colors.
28A budget-friendly & compact toolkit stocked with the basics
Whether you’re new to fixing things or you just want a set of basic tools to have in your home, this compact tool set is a great option. It comes with a total of 39 pieces, all stowed neatly in a storage-friendly box, and Mitchell calls it “perfect for everyday household repairs and tasks.” It’s great for taking on the go as well, and comes in a variety of colors. Mitchell also notes that “the quality is incredible” for the low price point.
29These flashlight gloves that keep your hands free in the dark
There are inevitably going to be times when you’re working on something in dim lighting or in the dark. In those moments, these handy flashlight gloves will make a big difference. Mitchell says they’re “perfect for plumbing or HVAC work in tight, dark spaces.” And while they don’t offer quite as much bright light as some bigger flashlights or lights, they’re super convenient and, according to Mitchell, provide “sufficient light to see your work area.”
30A weather-resistant extension cord made for outdoor use
“Every handyperson needs a reliable extension cord,” Mitchell says. This heavy-duty extension cord is an excellent option to fill that role. Available in a variety of sizes up to 100 feet, this is a durable cord made with outdoor use in mind. It’s resistant to moisture and abrasion, with a molded plug that makes it super sturdy.
31These heavy-duty storage straps for bulky cords
Inspired by Mitchell’s extension cord recommendation, these durable storage straps can hold up to 100 pounds and are great for organizing your garage, shed, or workroom. You can wrap them around large extension cords, hoses, and more, then hang them on a hook on the wall. They’re also great for carrying these bulky items around the yard as needed with the convenient handle.
32A cordless screwdriver this expert calls a “must-have”
This precision screwdriver has some great features that make it so easy to use. There’s a quick-change chuck that allows you to swap bits quickly, a slide switch to easily toggle between forward and reverse, and an ergonomic cushioned handle so it’s comfortable to hold. “It’s a game-changer for small repairs and electronics,” says Chris Langley, director at Patio Doors. “Its cordless design and precise control make it a must-have for any handyman.”
33A small tire pressure gauge that helps keep you safe
“Keeping your tires at the correct pressure is essential for safety and efficiency,” Langley says. “This digital gauge is accurate, easy to use, and an essential tool for any vehicle owner.” A simple on/off button makes this a breeze to use, and other convenient features include automatic shut-off, a backlit LCD display for clear viewing, and a lighted nozzle for extra visibility in dimly lit areas. It’s also a compact size, so it can be taken anywhere.
34A versatile multi-tool screwdriver that is comfortable to use
Langley calls this multi-bit screwdriver “incredibly handy,” saying it “combines several tools into one compact unit,” which helps save on space while offering plenty of functionality. It can hold eight tips and convert to three nut driver sizes, has an interchangeable shaft that can be switched out easily, and has a comfortable handle that makes it feel great to use.
35These highly rated pliers that can remove any screw
These screw extractor pliers do exactly what the name implies: they make it easier to remove stripped or damaged screws without a ton of effort on your part. Langley recommends these specifically because he says, “the unique design grips screws securely, making difficult extractions easy.” They’re made of high-carbon steel that is built to last, so they’ll be part of your toolkit for a very long time.
36This magnetic stud finder that makes it a lot easier to hang things
Hanging something on drywall properly means searching for the right studs, which can be tricky. This magnetic stud finder does all the work for you and is a must in any home. “Simply wave it over the wall to detect nails and screws in studs,” explains Jason Lamprey, owner at Square One Contracting Services. He calls it a “huge time-saver” and notes that at just about $10, it’s a great deal.
37A universal socket set the average homeowner should have on hand
This universal socket tool set is a practical basic for any homeowner, especially those who don’t have an extensive toolset on hand, because it replaces many other tools. “You can use it on just about any kind of bolt or fastener, meaning that it's the only tool you'll need to grab to fix many common household problems,” says Martin Orefice, CEO, Rent To Own Labs. With multi-function sockets that offer universal compatibility, this means you don’t have to constantly switch between multiple tools and sizes to get something done.
38A drill bit extender for any space that an expert calls “invaluable”
This flexible screwdriver drill bit extension is excellent to have on hand for hard-to-reach areas. It “allows your drill to access tight, awkward spaces that would otherwise be unreachable,” says Tommy Mello, founder of A1 Garage Door Service, who highly recommends it. He says it “significantly improves efficiency” because using it means you don’t have to constantly reposition yourself. “It bends and twists to fit into narrow gaps, making it invaluable for intricate jobs,” he says.
39This tool organizer that is made to keep small parts from getting lost
Small tools and parts like nails, beads, nuts, bolts, and more can easily get lost, especially if you’re toting them around in more than one room. This small parts organizer has up to 34 compartments with removable dividers to customize the space. “It ensures that all your parts are easily accessible and neatly arranged, reducing the time spent searching for specific items and keeping your workspace clutter-free,” Mello says. The carry handle and size make this super portable too.
40A flexible measuring ruler that gets dimensions of just about everything
Mello calls this multi-angle measuring ruler “perfect for taking complex measurements.” It’s an adjustable and flexible ruler that can be locked into any angle, which allows you to get the dimensions of awkwardly shaped items and spots. “It's especially useful for tiling, flooring, and woodworking projects where accurate measurements are critical,” he says. “This tool not only saves time but also ensures that your work is precise and professional.”
