The designers of color you should know about showing at New York Fashion Week

Impact

Last week an assortment of designers from Marc Jacobs to Tommy Hilfiger received a letter from the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) encouraging them to to be inclusive of "racial diversity" when casting models for this fall's New York Fashion Week.

Diversity, when it comes those strutting down the runway, has slowly been on the rise. But even so, models of color are a minority in the industry and this just might be because of the people deciding who wears their clothing: the designers.

46 of the designers of 150 official CFDA-sponsored brand shows and presentations are of color, but only eight are black (YEEZY, Telfar, 5:31 Jérôme, one of Cushnie et Ochs' designers, Hood by Air, Serena Williams, Pyer Moss and Tracy Reese) with the remainder being of Hispanic or Asian descent. This is not entirely surprising — as in Feb. 2015, the New York Times reported only approximately 12 out of 470 members of the CFDA are African-American.

Mic rounded up a full list of shows with designers of color, and the ones you should know ahead of their presentations, below.

Kanye West showed his fourth collection, Yeezy Season 4, on Wednesday at Four Freedoms Park on Roosevelt Island. Like his previous collections, most of the pieces were fairly basic, with a lot of knits in different shades of cream, brown and dark green.

Because of his casting call for "multiracial women," the show was quiet diverse with all of the models being of color and many with natural hair.
