Kim Kardashian was robbed at gunpoint and people are (wrongly) blaming her for it

Impact

Kim Kardashian West was robbed at gunpoint in an apartment in Paris early Monday morning, the two masked men making off with millions of dollars worth of jewelry.

While Kardashian West was not physically injured (neither was anyone else) during the robbery, many people seem to think a wife and mother of two young children being held at gunpoint is funny for some reason and that the incident is somehow her own fault.

By comparison, when Team USA swimmer Ryan Lochte reported he was robbed at gunpoint during the 2016 Rio Olympics — which turned out to be a boldfaced lie — he wasn't initially met with suspicion or blamed. Even after his story was turned inside out, some in the media made excuses for him, calling the 32-year-old Lochte a "kid" who just embellished his story a little.

While it's OK not to be especially fond of Kardashian West for whatever reason and bemoan celebrity-obsessed culture, it's not OK to suggest that it's funny that a woman was robbed violently — or that she some how brought it upon herself. Kardashian West taking selfies in expensive or revealing clothes in no way justifies her being attacked.

Kardashian West is no stranger to slut-shaming criticism of her career. And while many may say "who cares?" to the news of her getting mugged, the chorus of people blaming her for her own attack — from pointing to what she could have been wearing or her sexual history — is just an example of the victim blaming and shaming many victims of violence face everyday.
