DC Navy Shooting: Senate On Precautionary Lockdown

Impact

The U.S. Senate has gone on lockdown after a shooting at the Navy Yard in Washington DC Monday morning that killed at least 12 individuals.  In light of uncertainty, the U.S. Senate complex locked down to ensure the safety of personnel out of an "abundance of caution."

Two suspects wearing military-style uniforms were initially reported at large. However, around 2:45 in the afternoon, the deputy mayor for public safety stated that one previously identified person of interest, who was previously described as white male wearing a tan military uniform, is no longer a suspect.

A remaining suspect has been described by DC Police Chief Cathy Lanier as a black male between 40 and 50 in an olive military-style uniform, approximately 5'10 with greying sideburns.

The Senate lockdown means that nobody is allowed to enter or leave the Senate building for two hours. Navy Yard area residents are being asked to remain inside, and a number of area schools remain on lockdown.
