In one tweet, actor Kumail Nanjiani nails why the world is marching for science

Impact

Hundreds of thousands in Washington, D.C., and around the world on Saturday marked Earth Day by marching in support of science

The cause would seem uncontroversial, except we live in an age of "alternative facts" — when President Donald Trump has installed a fellow climate change-denier to the head of the Environmental Protection Agency, proposed drastic funding cuts to the sciences and reversed key Obama-era environmental initiatives.

It's not just science that's under attack — it's reality itself, as actor Kumail Nanjiani of HBO's Silicon Valley pointed out on Twitter.

Nanjiani's tweet summed up what many of the marchers Saturday were trying to get the Trump administration to understand — that facts matter.
